So you’ve decided you’re ready to try CBD or one of the other hemp cannabinoids, now the question is, which one is the best cannabinoid for you? CBD, CBG, or CBN – learn more about these wonderful cannabinoids and find the best hemp cannabinoid for you!

What Are Cannabinoids?

There are over 400 naturally occurring chemical compounds that can be found in hemp, about 100 of which are cannabinoids. When cannabinoids are consumed they interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, giving each user their own unique cannabinoid experience.

Based on existing research, each type of cannabinoid has different effects on different areas of this system. Few, such as THC, can influence psychoactivity in the brain, while others interact more with pain receptors or the immune system.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

In the early 1990’s, scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system; a 500 million year old system not only found in the human body, but also in all vertebrates like fish, birds, and other mammals.

The endocannabinoid system is a complex network of receptors located all over the body that plays an important role in helping the body maintain a state of homeostasis. Each new cannabinoid that is introduced to the body’s endocannabinoid system will interact with these receptors in different ways.

Cannabinoids mimic the endocannabinoids that naturally exist in the body, which is why scientists are so fascinated with them. Studies on various cannabinoids have shown that they interact positively with this system because of their similarities. What’s even more interesting is that each cannabinoid has its own properties that could potentially affect different parts of the endocannabinoid system.

What Kind of Cannabinoids Can You Buy?

CBD

Cannabidiol has gotten a lot of attention in recent years after the FDA approved Epidiolex, a clinical drug that contains cannabidiol, in 2018. More and more studies have been done on this compound since then, which is why it’s on everyone’s radar. This is one of the more common cannabinoid products you’ll find both online and in person.

CBG

CBG stands for cannabigerol and it’s another cannabinoid that’s been picking up steam on the research front. Several studies are being done to see how CBG interacts with glaucoma. One study takes a look at how cannabigerol interacts with eye pressure and drainage.

CBN

The interest in cannabinol has increased as researchers work to better understand the different cannabinoids in the hemp plant. CBN doesn’t give the user a “high” feeling, but it has been found to have a big sedative effect. Unfortunately, there isn’t a great deal of research on this cannabinoid yet, but one 1975 study looked at its sedative effect on mice.

Delta 8

Delta 8 tetrahydrocannabinol is a more recent cannabinoid on the scene. It’s closely related to delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC. Delta 8 is a minor cannabinoid that occurs in small amounts and as THC degrades. Even though it is closely related to THC, Delta 8 doesn’t have the same psychotropic effects. That’s because it binds to the CB1 receptor in the central nervous system while THC binds to both the CB1 and CB2 receptors. This is a key difference and researchers are curious about what else makes delta 8 so unique, including the potential research to be used as an appetite stimulant.

Know What You Want

First, you need to know what you want to buy because not every CBD company has the same products. If you’re new to cannabinoids then you might not even know what products are available. Here are some of the most common ones:

Third-Party Testing

The cannabinoid industry is relatively new and unregulated. This means that anyone can say a product contains cannabinoids even if it doesn’t. It’s also important to know that not every company has the same process or standards, so their product may not be as potent or may contain harmful chemicals or contaminants.

That’s why it’s crucial to look for third-party testing Certificate of Analysis. If a company doesn’t readily offer this, take that as a red flag. If a company is reputable and has had the necessary lab tests performed, then it should have a certificate of analysis. Just like the title sounds, this confirms that the products have been tested for quality.

Some other things to review when choosing a CBD company include:

  • Make sure the manufacturer tracks its raw material from seed to sale, from local domestic hemp sources.
  • Transparent about the manufacturing process and ingredients in each product.
  • Provides information on their extraction process, cultivation techniques, and quality control manufacturing standards.
